left without a sandshoe or galosh

one is in a hopeless situation, i.e., what can one do with only one sandshoe and one (wet weather) galosh. When referring to someone who has lost all in a gamble, been swindled, left homeless ,been stupid and as a result has lost all etc.
Contributor's comments: Used in Sydney but this expression is not relative to the region. Believe originated in early 1900's in Tasmania or Nthn NSW.
