hoover

vacuum cleaning: I'll hoover the carpets before I do the groceries.

Contributor's comments: "Hoover" often used for vacuuming in my youth, in Canberra and Sydney.

Contributor's comments: Not of any particular region. The origin of the word "Hoover" of course is from the most common, if not first brand of vacuun cleaner when they first appeared as a household item. The use can be extended to be the name of a small child prone to eating or tasting any or all items he finds lying on the ground. Hence, Hoover. "He'll pick up anything."

Contributor's comments: Grew up in central western NSW - then lived in Sydney for 30 years, then to Brisbane and Sunshine Coast (Qld) and have only ever heard my English friend use the term 'hoover'. I have always known it as the vacuum or 'the cleaner' and occasionally as the 'vacuum cleaner'.
