yacka

grass tree plant: See that yacka growing.

Contributor's comments: Can also be spelled 'yakka'? Is it somehow derived from the town of Yacka, about 160 km north of Adelaide?

Contributor's comments: What we in SA call Yacka is Grass Tree in WA, Xanthorea is [the] botanic name. Also called Black Boys in WA. A long lived small palm like plant with grassy top and long spear like flower heads. There is a town called Yacka in the mid north of SA, & Yacka Gum was/is extracted on Kangaroo Island for making varnish. (Obviously Yacka is a widely used term in Australia for work, & is a brand name for work clothing) I presume it is an Aboriginal word: "There are thousands of Yackas on Devil's Peak in the Flinders Ranges." "Yacka gum from Kangaroo Island is used to make varnish."
