gazinta

small flying insect: "Mum, what's this bug?" "Oh, darling, that's a gazinta."

Contributor's comments: "Gazinta" is also school-teacher slang for division sums -- to make them sound more interesting (from "goes into") e.g. "We'll do some mental arithmetic including gazintas".

Contributor's comments: I first heard the word Gazinta (its mathematical meaning) used on the TV show the Beverly Hillbillies by the character Jethro.

Contributor's comments: I first heard "Gazinta" as (jocular) mathematical term when my father used it in Manly (Sydney) the 1940s. He had lived only on the NSW Central Coast and the northern beaches of Sydney.
