run-away hole

In the southeast of South Australia, which is limestone country with many underground caverns, there exist "run-away" holes - depressions in the ground that appear to be solid yet in heavy downpours run-off water floods into the holes and drains rapidly away through the porous bottom of the hole. Very often a tree grows next to the bottom of these holes.

Contributor's comments: Friends lived about 1km away from a swamp with a run-away hole, and said when it let go you could hear the noise from their place, (of the draining, not a pop or anything).
